Is Keselowski ready to win big?

I am definitely not the first person to say that Brad Keselowski is a great racecar driver. I know I won’t be the last either. Brad Keselowski is currently leading five-time champion Jimmie Johnson with four races to go in the 2012 season. I’m not a Keselowski fan, but I certain do like him as a driver. Brad has a great talent and he’s using it very well.

It’s understandable where Keselowski fans frustration is coming from after Sunday’s race. I’ve felt it so many times over the years since I became a Kasey Kahne fan in 2006. I do think Brad will win a championship, but I think he needs feel the defeat of losing a championship before he can win a championship. look at Denny. Look how his 2010 season went. Almost identical to Brad’s season this year. Look at what happened in the final two races. Denny used 2011 to try and go as hard as he could to get that championship. Didn’t work. He came into the 2012 season a different person and it’s working. I think Brad has to go through what Denny went through in 2010 before winning a championship.

Brad is a good driver, but I don’t think he’s ready to win a championship just yet. Keselowski fans say that he is, but he hasn’t felt the pain of losing a championship and I think that’s key when becoming a champion. I took Jimmie Johnson four years to finally win his first in 2006. Jimmie had never finished lower than 5th in the points up to that point in his career. This is Brad’s second Chase and he’s doing extremely well. You people are forgetting who he is trying to beat in the championship this year. Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has been trailing at this point in the chase twice before and won both times. Jimmie and Chad know how to get things done. And no they don’t cheat to get there.

I don’t think Brad is a favorite to win. Just like Clint Bowyer and Kasey Kahne, Brad Keselowski is a dark horse. Jimmie and Denny have been through this before. Brad made a good effort last year, but hasn’t really been a contender for the championship until this year, just like Bowyer and Kahne. That’s what makes him a dark horse. Everyone else can put him in the favorite category, but he is in the dark horse category.

Hate me all you want for my opinion, but that’s what it is. Long story short, Brad isn’t ready to be the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship yet. Maybe in a year or two. He needs to lose one before he can fully understand what it truly means to be a champion. He needs to know how it feels to lose something as huge as a championship. Jimmie’s bad races have come. It’s time for Brad’s to hit and I have a feeling it’s going to be big.

Round Table Edition

Last year, right after Kasey Kahne’s win at Darlington in the Truck Series, I came out with a round table discussion of what does it mean to Kasey’s momentum. This year, Kasey comes back into the round table, along with AJ Allmendinger. Last year, four people helped me discuss the issues. This year, two of them come back with two new people. Let’s quick meet the panel:
Samantha Rae: Yours truly. Writer for Sam’s Thoughts at http://www.rockmelikeahurrikahne5.blogspot.com. Founder of NASCAR Racing IS a Sport! on Facebook and I currently run @TheBayneWagon on twitter. Been a NASCAR fan since the mid 90’s. Diehard Kasey Kahne fan. Been since 2006. Currently working on getting into University of Wisconsin-Green Bay to major in journalism. I hope to be a NASCAR writer in the next few years. Follow me on twitter at @HurriKahne_5
David Folz is a publisher of two articles in newspapers, the Watertown Daily Times in Watertown, WI and The Herald-Progress in Richmond, VA. Graduate of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in Broadcast Journalism class of 2011. Cover College football for dailyshootout.com. follow him at @folzybear16
Stephanie Piech is from Connecticut. been an avid NASCAR fan since 2003, and the only races she’s been to have been at Dover Downs.  have a couple drivers that i always root for, but right now her top favorite is Joey Logano. Her twitter handle is @stephisahotmess
She used to write for a blog a few years ago she started. You can find her blog posts at http://thefinishlinebystephpiech.blogspot.com/
Garrett Beisheim lives in upstate New York. Racing is his favorite sport, and hockey is a close second. He has been to Watkins Glen three times and his favorite driver is Tony Stewart. He’s not 100% sure on what I want to do when he gets out of school, but he wants to be involved with NASCAR somehow. He currently have he own blog http://racingtothecheckered.blogspot.com/ and if you want to talk to him. you can follow him on twitter and he will follow back almost immediately @Gman1439
Jason Schultz’s dream is one day to be a NASCAR reporter. Currently 14 and doing all he can to reach that goal and doing so by discussing the sport I love. He’s currently a NASCAR writer for multiple sites including SpeedwayMedia.com and StartNParkBlog.com. He became a NASCAR fan in 2005. His favorite driver then was Ryan Newman. He’s also liked Kyle Busch. He’s been to races at Dover, New Hampshire, Daytona, Watkins Glen and soon Bristol! He’s very excited to attend his first Bristol night race this August. He started his own blog http://www.Turn4RacingNews.com in December of 2011 and he has been keeping fans up to date on all NASCAR news and throwing a creative twist in as well. follow him on twitter at @Nascar_Jason_.
Now that everyone has met my panel, let’s get down to business. The first topic. What do you all think about AJ Allmendinger’s suspension? (this was before the indefinite suspension.)
Steph Piech: I think NASCAR is taking too long to evaluate the second sample... if they really wanted to get it all worked out for both parties
Samantha Rae: well AJ was the one who chose the test date for his B sample so it's not just NASCAR
David Folz: To me, A.J.'s suspension means a lot of things. In a nutshell however it means NASCAR's drug policy does not target anyone, despite what some may want to believe. Their percentage is 100 percent (counting the top 3 series) because they have Jeremy Mayfield, and before that Shane Hmiel, who called NASCAR on saving his life. I found it shocking though that A.J. did take something, regardless of what it is. If it is something like a cough medicine or supplement, then really he should have looked at the labels. He has no one to blame on this but himself. Assuming that A.J's second test comes back the same as the first, he's probably as good as done as far as a Sprint Cup ride. But we can also go through what I will call the Ryan Braun trials of a possible false positive and if that happens, both sides have some serious explaining to do.
Samantha Rae: it could have definitely have been a false positive. we may never actually know
David Folz: that happens, A.J's season is already practically over because he'll miss probably three races, if I am NASCAR, while you don't want a guy to fail a drug test, you almost hope they do for the sake of if he comes back and nothing is in the system you have a Public Relations nightmare waiting to happen
Jason Schultz: I think it'll take a long shot for him to test negative on the b sample but I don't think the b sample comes back positive. The little that I know AJ he doesn't seem like a guy who would jeopardize everything to enhance his performance.
David Folz: right that is a true point Jason. His problem is that first test failed so he's really in a deep hole, and there have really been two reversals of fortune in these (both in baseball) but if AJ's the 3rd false positive, all you know what breaks loose in the NASCAR HQ
Garrett Beisheim: working off of david’ oops working off of david's post about AJ, yea, AJ's season is over, and if it does come back negative i say there will be some problems between NASCAR and AJ
Okay, here’s the second topic. With Kasey Kahne’s win at New Hampshire, what does this do to the wildcard chase? As of right now, Kasey currently holds that number one wildcard spot with six weeks.
Steph Piech: i think Kasey's win will help him a lot! he's got great momentum these past few months and i think it's definitely helped his and his team's confidence! And i know the next couple of races play right into his hand because he's pretty good on all of them and are Kasey type tracks.
David Folz: oh the Wild Card what to make of it except it is totally screwed up this year and will be if that 24 car decides to put a full race together and win. Kasey's second win practically assures him a lock into the Chase since he's on a roll and Tony Stewart decides to show up every other race. For Kasey he shouldn't let up, for he can play a huge role in getting the cup. For this to be completely flipped upside down either Carl Edwards should get to being good this year, Joey Logano/Ryan Newman shock everyone by winning, or as I pointed earlier that Gordon wins. And if Gordon wins, this race for the second wildcard gets so upside down its insane. Arguably other than Kahne, Gordon has been the best of the guys from 11-20 in the standings since Edwards hasn't done anything, Busch's motors can't last, Logano and Newman don't know how to stay away from each other and Kahne is so far away from anyone he's winning in his own area code. Unless any of Busch, Logano and Newman win anything and chances are they may not do it, you have to think Gordon and Kahne could almost be the favorites because Gordon has won so much at Indy, at Atlanta, Bristol, and tracks leading up to the Chase. Only Kyle Busch is Gordon's biggest threat.
Jason Shultz: KK's second wild card victory basically assures his spot in the chase. No 2 wild card contending drivers are likely to win 3 or more races in the next 7 (6 since this conversation happened). Kyle has a great shot at getting that second wild card. Edward's probably won't be able to do anything with a new chief and I don't think JoLo or Newman can win one of these next seven races or past Kyle in the standings. Kyle has the experience in getting into the chase and doing well so experience will pay off. I think JG's waited to long to make a move. He might get 1 win but 2-3 is very unlikely. He needs to become more consistent to start off the seasons
David Folz: Very true, it really comes down to if Kyle's equipment can stay together and if it does, and he wins another one of these, he'll be in.
Garrett Beisheim: I Say unless one of the other wildcard drivers goes on a winning spree, Kasey Kahne will be in the chase, leaving all the others fighting for one more spot. I don't think Joey Logano will be able to do too much, if he does, it will be when they go back to Pocono. I think Newman's best shot at winning will be at Michigan. If Kyle and his team can race well, Kyle has a shot at winning everywhere, in my opinion. I think he will be a big threat when the cup series heads to Watkins Glen.
Samantha Rae: people are going to have a tough time beating Kasey at this point in the season. two wins and only 66 points out of the top 10 with 7 races left.(six since the conversation happened).  I think he can get into the Chase WITHOUT a wildcard spot. he's been too good in this stretch to not make it in. as far as the wildcard spots, If Kasey gets into the top 10, will be Kyle Busch and I don't know who will be the other one. I think Carl is going to miss the Chase. you have to win and be consistent and that team is not. I don't think Chad Norris is going to help that team much before the Chase starts. Joey Logano has a shot, but he needs to kick his ass in gear if he wants to make it into his first ever Chase berth. I think he can do it, IF he wins again and if he stays consistent like Kasey.
David Folz: That is a fair thing but lets assume even with the great run with Kasey recently that the top 10 is set, barring a huge swing of everything happening. Its not far-fetched to say Kasey can get into the top 10 but its really unlikely to happen. Assuming Kasey also has one spot locked up, the key comes down to three things: 1. Does Kyle win somewhere he has dominated (Bristol) or does he falter like he has for the last 2 months? 2. Even with Chad Norris being the guy up top for Carl, do they gel or has Edwards already thrown out the white flag on his year, acknowledging his year is practically done unless someone in the top 10 drops out? 3. He had struggled in every way besides his car spontaneously combusting all over the place to start the year, don't discount Jeff Gordon for the simple fact of he nearly won at Indy and Bristol and did win at Atlanta, he's still not out of it yet, can he throw a wrench into this whole ordeal? These next 7 races will be a lot of fun for anyone to watch.
A day after we had finished the round table, the news of AJ’s indefinite suspension came out. Once again, I took it to the round table.
Samantha Rae: okay, since the new came out today while I was at work, what are your thoughts on the indefinite suspension on AJ Allmendinger?
Garrett Beisheim: I think AJ will get back rather quickly, this is nothing compared to Mayfield's problem. I will still stand behind him, I don't see a big problem with a "stimulant". Sure you don't want someone drugged driving a stock car at 200mph but if it is just exceeded the limit NASCAR allows then I don't think its a big deal. But the NASCAR rulebook sets things straight, so we will just have to see what will happen to AJ. This will definitely screw up his career, but if he can come back fast enough, he might be able to save some of it.
Jason Schultz: I think AJ will take the road to recovery in this situation. But he will never be in as good of equipment as he was in with Penske ever again because of this. This killed his career. He went from being a good guy to a bad guy. He might of accidentally taken the drugs but he wasn't careful about it so he will suffer the consequences. I was hoping this wouldn't happen but whatever the little bit of illegal drug he took, it killed his career.
David Folz: Well A.J. Allmendinger is done...sad but true. If he is stupid he'll try the Mayfield approach of being an idiot about it. Overall, he's done as a top driver. Maybe someone gives him a chance after going through the drug rehab stuff but really we are wishing on shooting stars if he is going to be put into even a decent NASCAR ride again.
Samantha Rae: I don’t think AJ is done. I know that he’s had two failed drug tests, but i think, with the rehab program, AJ will be back in NASCAR. Not this season, but next. The program is at minimum, 6 months, so we all know he won’t be back this season. AJ has the talent to race in NASCAR, I just think he needs to get things straight before coming back.
Steph Piech: obviously, it's not something he wanted to have happen because it definitely not good for him or for the team. However, by him saying he's going into the recovery program is a major step for him and NASCAR. If and when he comes back i don't know if he'll be able to land a top ride that he had before the whole incident. He's a driver with a lot of potential but many of his fans will never know what his future with Penske could've held.
There is so much we could have talked about, but it would have been never ending. All we can really do right now is watch to see if our predictions are right or wrong. Until next time…

Matt Kenseth to leave Roush Fenway Racing at the end of the 2012 season

It had been talked about for a while now. Will Matt Kenseth stay at Roush or will he leave? Today, that question was answer. Matt Kenseth is indeed leaving Roush Fenway Racing at the end of the 2012 season. Kenseth, who just turned 40 in March, has been with the organization since 200, his rookie year. He has made 451 of his 452 starts with Roush and has won 22 races, including two Daytona 500s. What does this mean for that so-to-be vacant 17 seat? What does this mean for Matt in general? Where is he going?
All sources point to Joe Gibbs Racing for Matt’s next home. Already home to Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, and Joey Logano, I think Matt could make a good home there. Will he be in the 20 car or a 4th car, no one knows that this point.
Now back to the 17 car. Jack is going to have to fill it. And he’s filling it with defending NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Stenhouse, who has won three races so far in the 2012 season and is sitting 3rd in the points, has nowhere else to go but up. I think putting Ricky into that 17 car is going to make Ricky’s career. Ricky is an amazing driver and Jack’s decision to put him in that 17 car is the best decision.
What Matt Kenseth said about the news on his twitter page:
‘I'm very thankful to Jack Roush for the opportunities he's given me over the past 14 years. Together we have enjoyed a lot of success And as a team we are committed as ever to the remainder of the 2012 season and chasing a 3rd sprint cup title for Jack and RFR. Although I have nothing to announce regarding 2013, I feel the timing of this announcement gives RFR ample time to get things lined up. Darien and Tony proved to us last year there is no such thing as a "lame duck" team or season. We will continue to go to work and race hard.’
What do you guys think?
@nascarlinds99_5: It's surprising since he is the point leader and all. I always felt he'd be like Jeff and stay with Roush. But $ woes exist.
@K_Uselman_97: Sad hes leaving Roush..but hes gonna do good wherever he goes! :)
@SNL24: Hope he goes to JGR and replaces Joey Logano, but will most likely replace Dinger since Penske is going to Ford.
@Bri_Smith91: very shocked. Hope he gets a ride that he will be able to still be competitive. Ricky will have an awesome opportunity though.
@sluddy14: kenseth only got a few more good years left, stenhouse needed full time ride or could leave RFR. Kenseth to 43 and Dodge I say

@folzybear16: the end of an era but a new beginning happens for both sides, and Stenhouse gets to prove himself
@tunabully1: I am suprised that he is leaving RFR. Only guy 2 win Roush any championships & leading the points. Nobody is safe
@KristenGoRawr: It won't matter where he goes, Matt will win in whatever he jumps in.
Matt’s always been one of my favorite drivers, not just because we’re both from Wisconsin, it’s because Matt knows how to drive and he knows how to win. It has been a great 14 years for Matt Kenseth and Roush. I wish Matt Kenseth nothing but the best in the coming years and I will follow him where ever fate lands him. Right now, all Matt needs to worry about is winning the 2012 Championship. He is the current leader.

Racing in 2012 is the best it’s been a while

2011 ended with the best championship battle we’ve seen in years. Everyone said that you have to win to win the championship. That’s exactly what Tony Stewart did after going winless in the regular season. Tony tore up the Chase by winning 5 of the 10 races. What Tony lacked in consistency, Carl had. But, it wasn’t enough to beat Tony Stewart.  Though they both finished with the same amount of points, Tony won the championship because of the tie breaker. Can you believe that? Tony Stewart won the championship because of a tie breaker! First time that has ever happened! That tells you that NASCAR took a step in the right direction with the Chase format.
Let’s fast forward to 2012. There were so driver changes and drivers that didn’t even pick up a Cup team. The most shocking one in my opinion was Kurt Busch. After a meltdown at Homestead, Roger Penske felt that Kurt’s actions were reflecting badly on his team and Kurt was let go. Penske picked up AJ Allmendinger, who had been let go from Richard Petty Motorsports.
Daytona started off with a bang. Literally. Over half of the cars and trucks were wrecked in a week. Then the bang happened. How do you run into a jet dryer? Under caution?
Besides the crashing at Daytona, the Cup series hasn’t seen a lot of cautions flags, but the competition has been fierce. 8 winners in the past 11 races. What is making the racing in 2012 so good? What is making this season so much better than other seasons? Is the way the drivers have changed their racing styles? There are so many factors to really get to the reason.
I got a little insight on that the fans think is happening so far in 2012:
‏@Josh_Klier2451: This year is great! The races have been hard fought and clean. I am glad there are less yellows, hopefully the road courses. Although being a Jeff Gordon fan and a Kurt Busch fan i will say it breaks my heart to see the way. They have been struggling. Praying for them to turn it around though. Will stay clean too!
@KristenKahne5: everybody sees how easily they can be replaced (Kurt Busch, for ex.) Stepping up so they aren't tossed aside
@TerryB_63: because Nascar wants it that way, even the backmarker teams r good.
Penny Osborne: Could be multiple factors at work. 1) the points . . . the first 26 races are crucial, can't get too far behind, drivers are more cautious; 2) the cars . . . they hold up better; 3) the tires . . . they hold up better; 4) the economy . . . the start and park cars get off early, less cars on the track. We've also got a great group of talented drivers (a couple of exceptions) who know what they are doing!!!
Are we ever going to really figure out why the competition has been so good this year? Is there really a specific reason why it’s happening? Should we be worried or happy that it’s so good? Do we get worried there hasn’t been a lot cautions or do we praise the drivers for not driving like complete idiots? Either way, competition has never been as good as it has been now.

Chad Knaus penalized big by NASCAR for illegal C-posts, Hendrick plans to appeal

We all knew the 48 team was going to get penalize, but we didn’t think it was going to be this big! NASCAR just handed out a hefty punishment for both Chad Knaus and his car chief Ron Malec for illegal C-posts on Jimmie Johnson’s Daytona 500 car. Both Knaus and Malec have been suspended for 6 races, Chad has been fined $100K, and both have been put on probation until May 9th. If you ask me, I think this is a tad too harsh. NASCAR had said that the C-posts weren’t how they were supposed to be, but not by much. How does fractions of an inch or whatever it was amount to that big of a penalty? I’ve been thinking about this and thinking about what went through NASCAR’s mind when they came up with this punishment for Knaus and Malec? Cheating down solve anything, especially when you get caught. This is Chad’s first offense and I don’t think it’s going to be his last. Chad is always known for trying to find something new and NASCAR not liking it.

When I started this, I was thinking about the fan. What did the fans think? How did the fans react about the penalty? A lot of people were happy that Chad got punished so much. Others, not so much. So, to see exactly what they thought, I took it to twitter and Facebook and this is what I got.

@nascarlinds99_5 I think that the previous infractions may have played a part in the harshness, the repeat offender piece

‏@GERI13FAN I believe it's fair no worse than handed 2 MWR on windshield issue.Chad repeat offender, 4x I think, almost match champ # lol

‏ @denver2u Even tho NASCAR says differently, I think the penalties are harsher due to his past behavior..ie..told JJ to wreck car at Deg

Elizabeth Hickman I think if Chad wants to try something new with the car, he should contact NASCAR first and then see if they approve or disapprove I respect Jimmie but Chad is just fishy. I understand that he wants to push the limit in order to get an edge on the competition, but after all the times he's been caught...guy just needs to chill. He's smart no doubt but cheating gives you a bad reputation

Sarah Lingerfelt Same story, different year. Unless NASCAR or Rick comes down harder, its going to continue to happen

Christie Mack See I think he shouldn't have been fined...idk I'm sorta with Kyle petty on this. They went there to see what they could get away with. It didn't help them in anyway. However, it scares the other teams so they won't do it. And I'm with y'all I don't like Chad. Never had and don't think I ever will.

Courtney Cloutier I'm iffy...like part of me thinks it is a way too harsh penalty but then the other part is like he has done this before

@Timmycrews79 i think it was stupid that they fine him. they should have checked the 42car out more

@smokinace88 it’s bull crap! Clint Bowyer fails after his car was on track telling you they must have done something after the car passed. As for the 48 car it never was on track and they fixed the parts NASCAR told them to and passed so the penalty's is wrong!

Everyone has a right to their own opinion. Here is mine. Yeah, Chad screwed up. Was it worth it? Probably not. Was the punishment fair? Absolutely not. Yeah, NASCAR had to issue a penalty. Was it the right one? What did they use to make their decision? Just what happened during Speed Weeks? His other offenses? We’re probably never going to know what they used to make the final decision. I’m glad that Hendrick plans to appeal. They could lose or they could win. We just have to wait and find out. Both Chad and Ron will be at Phoenix this weekend as the 48 team comes into the race 70 points out of first and 23 points in the hole. If they win the race and lead the most laps, they will still be behind. Good luck 48 team. You’re going to need it.

Why Kenny Francis is my favorite crew chief

Kenny Francis has held quite a few different jobs in NASCAR, but the most important one so far is being Kasey Kahne’s crew chief. Kasey and Kenny have been together since Kasey’s breakout 2006 season, where Kasey and Kenny went on to win a season high of 6 races and finished 8th in the final standings. After the 2006 season, something went wrong. No, it wasn’t how Kasey was racing or how Kenny was calling the race. It was the unstable ground that these two were on. Evernham Motorsports, with all their merges, almost screwed Kasey and Kenny.

But, in 2010, Kasey got a dream ride; driving for RickHendrick. Now, the question that was on everyone’s mind, not just the Kasey fans, was if Kenny was going to head to Hendrick with Kasey. How could he not?
Hendrick is the best team in NASCAR. Such a great opportunity for both! Later that year Kenny made a decision. He was going to leave Richard Petty Motorsports and head to Hendrick with Kasey in 2012.

What about 2011? Kenny andKasey headed to the now dissolved Red Bull Racing for one year. Kasey finishedout the 2010 season at Red Bull and without Kenny. 2012 is going to bring so much to the table for both Kasey and Kenny. So much opportunity to shine and show the skeptics that they can win races and compete for championships.

Now on to what this is really all about. Ever since Kenny was paired with Kasey in 2006, I’ve been a fan. Kenny and Kasey work so well together. It’s amazing really, how well they work together. You don’t see that kind of relationship between drivers and their crew chiefs anymore.

Kenny is my favorite crew chief for many reasons. You’ll never see Kenny crack under pressure. Kenny is so calm and collected; you would never really know what he’s thinking. He has such a good way of hiding that. He doesn't let anything faze him. Even when he’s happy, Kenny keeps all his emotions in check. One of my favorite things about Kenny is when he‘s talking to Kasey on the radio and he says things like ‘Go
hard.’ makes me take in a completely different way. It’s very funny. I love how he works with Kasey. Even though he’s a crew chief, he still thinks like an engineer. He has an engineer’s brain and the brain of a race. Kenny spent his early years as a racer from Florida, but decided to pursue a job other than
racing.

Kasey and Kenny are a lot alike. Kasey and Kenny don’t do a lot of talking, so I think that’s how Kenny knows how to work with Kasey so well. I think that’s how Kenny knows how to talk to Kasey. They learn so much from each other and it’s great to listen to them talk on the radio or interact before a race. I don't think people know how much Kasey and Kenny are alike. They never really been ones to talk a lot. They are both quiet guys and I think that's how Kenny knows how to work with Kasey. They've never gotten mad at each other, which is a really good thing.

Kenny is probably one of the most UNDERRATED crew chiefs in the garage and one of the smartest too. There are a lot of people in the Hendrick camp that are thrilled to have Kenny on the team. Chad Knaus is excited to learn different things from Kenny. As I recall, Chad called himself a Kenny Francis fan. Who wouldn’t want to be a Kenny Francis fan? I am super confident about the 2012 season for Kasey and
Kenny. With Hendrick equipment and the insight from the other crew chiefs, 2012 may very well be the start of an amazing partnership with Kenny Francis and Hendrick Motorsports.
